Today we welcome Andrea Wildenthal Hanson to the show.  She is a speaker, bestselling author, and master certified life coach. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000, Andrea empowers people to become their own wellness hero, instead of the victim of a disease. Andrea combines her experience from five years of life coaching and 16+ years of living with MS to teach her audience how to create a customized approach to health that includes life balance, mindset tune-ups, and stress management so that they can feel in control of a life they love.

Andrea Hanson has two bookS:
1. "Live Your Life, Not Your Diagnosis: How to Manage Stress and Live Well With Multiple Sclerosis"  - written for people newly diagnosed with MS (Applicable to anything, though). It talks about the major ah-ha's that she had in my own health care and how to manage stress- for good - because stress management is so important for MS. This is about the deep work you can do - thought work and mindset shifts - to get you to shed a huge layer of everyday stress.
2.  "Stop Carrying the Weight of Your MS - The Art of Losing Weight, Healing Your Body, and Soothing Your MS"-  teaches the reader how to navigate the relatively new world of health-hacking and extreme diets to stay well. It shows them how to be their own "wellness hero" and find what works for them (we're all different), and to stop being confused about conflicting advise on what to eat and how to live.
If you would like to receive free electronic copies of both of her books, email Andrea at  Email her with "BTBHA podcast" in the subject line.

Dr. Meaghan and Dr. Ron Kirschling are back for the third part of our book club for Food Politics by Marion Nestle.

Our discussion includes the following chapters in the book

    • Starting Early: Underage Consumers
    • Pushing Soft Drinks: "Pouring Rights
    • Science versus Supplements: "A Gulf of Mutual Incomprehension."
    • Making Health Claims Legal: The Supplement Industry's War with the FDA
    • Deregulation and Its Consequences

More information about the book Food Politics:

"We all witness, in advertising and on supermarket shelves, the fierce competition for our food dollars. In this engrossing exposé, Marion Nestle goes behind the scenes to reveal how the competition really works and how it affects our health. The abundance of food in the United States--enough calories to meet the needs of every man, woman, and child twice over--has a downside. Our over-efficient food industry must do everything possible to persuade people to eat more--more food, more often, and in larger portions--no matter what it does to waistlines or well-being. Like manufacturing cigarettes or building weapons, making food is big business. Food companies in 2000 generated nearly 900 billion in sales. They have stakeholders to please, shareholders to satisfy, and government regulations to deal with. It is nevertheless shocking to learn precisely how food companies lobby officials, co-opt experts, and expand sales by marketing to children, members of minority groups, and people in developing countries. We learn that the food industry plays politics as well as or better than other industries, not least because so much of its activity takes place outside the public view. Editor of the 1988 Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and Health, Nestle is uniquely qualified to lead us through the maze of food industry interests and influences. She vividly illustrates food politics in action: watered-down government dietary advice, schools pushing soft drinks, diet supplements promoted as if they were First Amendment rights. When it comes to the mass production and consumption of food, strategic decisions are driven by economics--not science, not common sense, and certainly not health. No wonder most of us are thoroughly confused about what to eat to stay healthy. An accessible and balanced account, Food Politics will forever change the way we respond to food industry marketing practices. By explaining how much the food industry influences government nutrition policies and how cleverly it links its interests to those of nutrition experts, this path-breaking book helps us understand more clearly than ever before what we eat and why."

Dr. Mary Wingo is here to further talk about the social issues of our time that have the biggest impact on our health: the uncontrolled stress of modern life and its devastating effects on our bodies and our communities

Human stress costs our communities trillions of dollars every year. In addition, millions of people die prematurely, or suffer disability needlessly because of preventable exposure to stress.

She also wants to tell you about the 20 years it took her to "really" understand human stress, and how she was initially reluctant to write her book covering the social, political, and economic implications of stress in the modern world.

Her book, The Impact of the Human Stress Response, is a humanitarian work intended to educate the public worldwide about the true causes and costs of preventable human stress. The study of stress and adaptation is probably the most complicated and fascinating field in science. After more than a hundred years of study, most scientists are still mystified by the mechanisms of human adaptation, so this book is of great importance to the general public and will transform many, many lives.

Mary Wingo has been a permanent resident in Ecuador for 2 years. She trained as a Ph.D. scientist and is a business person originally from the United States.

Today she is coming back on the show to talk specifically about two of the five major causes of stress in the modernized world (the loss of social capital and social equality).  The five stressors are:

1. The loss of working mental capacity

2. The loss of social capital

3.  The loss of social equality

4.  The depletion of the microbiome

5.  Chemical stress

I can't thank her enough for coming back on the show and sharing her knowledge and expertise.  This is a wonderful conversation that I am glad that we were able to have to bring awareness to the stress of social inequality.
