Dr. Meaghan and Dr.  Ron Kirschling dive into the book The Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain- For Life by Dr. David Perlmutter.  This book really dives into the effects that the gut microbe has on brain health.  And even how the gut microbiome is linked to different diseases such as autism, obesity, and general health.

We have attacked our microbiome due to environmental factors, such as:

  • Food sources
  • Antibiotic use
  • Lack of breastfeeding
  • C section births
  • Antimicrobial products

Due to these, and other reasons, we are seeing a rise in conditions that can be linked back to the gut and the microbiota being off.

  • The role of the microbiota with epigenetics and the expression of disease.
  • How microbiome helps to manage inflammation
  • We transport our microbiome from one generation to the next
  • The gut and the brain are bidirectional.  The brain affects the GI tract and the GI tract affects the brain.  And leaky gut causes leaky brain.
  • Why berberine is a super supplement and how it improves the gut balance and overall health because of its effects on the gut
  • How gut bacteria can affect sleep, mood, immune system, autism, obesity and depression

Today we welcome Dr. Jeremy Schmoe of Minnesota Functional Neurology and Chiropractic. This is just a fascinating podcast talking about the importance of brain health and rehabilitating the brain for optimal wellness.

This has been one of my favorite podcasts to date because people don't talk enough about the importance of rehabilitating the brain no matter what the trauma has been. Dr. Schmoe breaks this down into an easy to understand way. On top of that his background is very impressive.

Dr. Jeremy Schmoe (DC DACNB FACFN, FABBI), a Minnesota concussion doctor and owner of Minnesota Functional Chiropractic & Neurology (MFNC.) He is a leading practitioner who works with patients from all over Minnesota as well as the USA.

Dr. Schmoe has successfully completed the TBI Fellowship Examination for Brain Injury Rehabilitation and specializes in helping patients who are suffering from concussions and complex brain injuries, and is an expert in Chiropractic Functional Neurology. Dr. Schmoe is a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist and a Fellow of Functional Neurology.

Dr. Schmoe is also a speaker for the Carrick Institute of Graduate Studies, where he shares his expertise and presents advice on managing patients with concussion and brain injury. In this role, he teaches and educates other practitioners about clinical applications in functional neurology. He has also lectured for the Minnesota Chiropractic Association, Northwestern Health Science University, University of Minnesota Sports Performance Program and various patient support groups.

Dr. Schmoe can be found at the two following websites:

Recently there was an article that I found on about a potential link that was found between folic acid and autism. Here is a link to the article: The article discusses the fact that there might be a connection between taking too much folic acid and B12 during pregnancy and an increase in autism. The immediate reaction to this research is that this is premature and women should still stay on folic acid during pregnancy. However, there are some concerns that I bring up in this podcast as we get into a deeper conversation on the matter. TOPICS DISCUSSED IN THIS PODCAST: -There are different forms of folic acid. L-5 MTHF is the desired folic acid for individuals with methylation problems -What are SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms)? These are genetic mutations that are present in individuals. -What is methylation? How does this process affect overall health and wellness? -Genetic testing and What role does genetic testing play in health? Podcast 112: Th1/Th2 Balance

BTBHA welcomes back Patrick Plum to discuss Th1/Th2 Balance.  Patrick shares with us his personal story about Th1 and Th2 dominance in order to show the importance of balancing the immune system when dealing with chronic diseases of the immune system such as Lyme Disease.

This is an aspect of health and infectious diseases that practitioners don't always explore.  Therefore, it is important for everyone to understand the way the both parts of the immune system (the cell-mediated Th1 and the humoral-mediated Th2) work.

Supplements that don't affect either Th1 or Th2 include Vitamin D, colostrum and fish oil.  Here is how the two systems of Th1 and Th2 breakdown:

Wendy and Dr. Meaghan discuss the different side of vitamin E and why it is among the most heralded and promoted supplement on the market… but also has a bad rep. Vitamin E is a major anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. We talk about how you don’t want the wrong form, in the wrong combination, or synthetic form.

Vitamin E is the umbrella term given to the collective group of fat-soluble compounds with distinctive antioxidant activities. Naturally occurring exists in 8 forms (2 main categories

  • Tocopherols
    • Alpha, beta, gamma, delta
  • Tocotrienols
    • Alpha, beta, gamma, delta
  • D- alpha tocopherol is natural
  • Dl- Alpha-tocopherol is synthetic and usually made from petroleum
  • A lot of research that comes out negative uses this form or high doses

Alpha-tocopherol is the main human form of vitamin E but not necessarily the only one that we should focus on and metabolized by the liver. Research shows that it must be relative to the amount of gamma tocopherol.

What you will learn in this episode
• The positive effects of Vitamin E
• How it is a strong cellular anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant that works on the cell membrane
• What the research has taught us about Vitamin E
