“We have so much capacity to meet the challenges of our time with strength and wisdom,” says Rhonda Magee, law professor and author of The Inner Work of Racial Justice. Despite growing up as a black woman in America during the civil rights era, Rhonda was always awed by her grandmother’s ability to remain optimistic in the face of adversity. Inspired by her grandmother’s spirit, Rhonda began to implement similar practices into her own life, including mindfulness. As a law professor and author, Rhonda uses the practice of mindfulness to challenge the system and provide solutions on how to tackle social issues.

According to Rhonda, in a society where bias, racism, and systemic injustices are deeply ingrained, healing is a continuous process. Because conflict causes mass division, most people’s instincts are to find safety among people who are similar and place the blame on others. In her book, Rhonda highlights inner work as an essential component to problem solving. Through the practice of mindfulness, Rhonda explains that we are able to increase our emotional intelligence and recognize our own biases because we are given space to be attentive to our thoughts and feelings. After we have dismantled our own barriers, we can heal generational traumas and connect with people of all backgrounds.

Tune into this week’s episode of Beyond the Basics Health Academy to understand why Rhonda Magee believes mindfulness is the roadmap to a more peaceful world. Learn how to implement daily doses of mindfulness in order to calm your fears and allow you to exercise the highest level of compassion towards yourself and others.

Quotes

• “We don't want to take all our biases about what we know into the world because learning opportunities are great opportunities to integrate what we know with what others know.” (13:46-13:59)

• “When we talk about race and racism, the traditional way of learning just bombards us with data, history, statistics, new words and concepts. It's important to have this information and it's important to think about the scholarly ways in which these ideas have been articulated. All those analyses are important to encounter and grapple with, but we're social and emotional and relational human beings in learning spaces.” (14:43-15:27)

• “All of this effort to understand race and racism and to understand any of our challenges is strengthened by being grounded.” (20:55-21:05)

• “Mindfulness is inviting this ability of growing up into the kinds of human beings who can face our fears, look beneath the rage and create some space and deeper capacity to navigate waters that are choppy.”  (35:13-35:44)

• "We can resolve our conflicts without violence, but we have to agree to bring some kind of mindfulness to the processes by which we participate in the systems.” (36:36-36:49)

• “We have so much capacity to meet the challenges of our time with strength and wisdom.” (43:03-43:10)

Your host Dr. Meaghan Kirschling and special guest Dr. Ron Kirschling are back for another book club episode! In this week’s book club, Meaghan and Ron break down Divided Mind by John E. Sarno. The book explores the connection between the mind and body and how this inextricable bond impacts our overall health.

The author, an orthopedist, believes there are other explanations for psychosomatic physical pain that aren't related to aging. Dr. Sarno explains that these pains are usually induced by repressed, unconscious emotions. He believes that emotions from our past can trigger many diseases such as fibromyalgia. Throughout his years of research, Dr. Sarno has found that continued suffering is related to patients’ reticence to truly accept the origin of their pain. He draws the conclusion that a more in-depth acknowledgement of our emotions and their source can often alleviate symptoms.

Tune into this week’s episode of Beyond the Basics Health Academy for a detailed summary of Divided Mind. Learn how our minds and bodies are interconnected, why it is important for medicine to focus on wellness rather than illness, and how our emotions play a vital role in our everyday physical experiences.

Quotes

• “The real dichotomy we face in health care is whether we are going to concentrate on illness or wellness.” (06:30-6:42)

• “We are really getting into this situation where we are not treating people holistically; instead, we are being conditioned to treat diseases.”  (07:54-08:00)

• “In general, if there is something you are trying to resist or there's something you're not dealing with, that will continue to persist.” (23:26- 23:31)

• “When there is stress and loss of control, we do see an increase in health conditions across the board.” (35:09-35:18)

Dr. David Steenblock is one of the world’s leading stem cell experts, specializing in the treatment of ALS, Cerebral Palsy and a wide range of other degenerative diseases. Over the course of his 40-year career, Dr. Steenblock has centered his practice around regenerative medicine, which focuses on matching therapies and treatments to an individual’s unique biochemical and genetic needs. Dr. Steenblock is particularly renowned for his work with stem cell treatments, and although these treatments are vastly underutilized, he has seen great success in thousands of his patients.

While there are many ways that you can retrieve stem cells, Dr. Steenblock prefers to use nutrient dense bone marrow stem cells, which he believes heal the body best. In one of his cases, a patient who had lost their vision entirely regained eyesight a few weeks after treatment. However, despite incredible successes such as this one, Dr. Steenblock still warns his patients about potential setbacks. Something as simple as a small infection can negate all progress that has been made. In order to see the best results, it is essential to follow your doctor’s orders and avoid situations that could potentially cause trauma to your body.

Join host Meaghan Kirschling on this week’s episode of Beyond the Basics Health Academy for a conversation with Dr. David Steenblock about the restorative power of stem cells. Learn more about what they are, how they are used and why Dr. Steenblock believes they are the biggest miracle in modern medicine.

Quotes

• “If you don't have any obstructions to the growth of your stem cells, you will see good results.”  (06:40- 06:48)

• “It may be true that fat has more stem cells, but they dont heal the body as well as stem cells from bone marrow do.” (20:00-20:05)

• “The number one way to help stem cells is to get rid of all infections.” (29:00-29:04)

“The chemical structure that chemists and pharmacists get to create the drugs that we use today are from nature. These are the chemicals in plants, these are the essential oils” says Dr. Eric Zielinkski, author of The Essential Oil Apothecary.  Dr. Zielinski explains that many people are too quick to write off essential oils as pseudoscience, when there is actually an abundance of scientific evidence proving that they are a key contributor to our health and wellbeing.

Unfortunately, there has been widespread misinformation regarding essential oils and their proper use in recent years. Because MLMs have sent out thousands of people who, despite being well-intentioned, are not in the medical or aromatherapy fields, essential oils have been largely discredited. However, it is important to recognize that essential oils actually serve as the foundation of most modern-day medicines! Dr. Zielinski’s mission is to help people explore the ways in which essential oils can alleviate symptoms of everything from stress to inflammation to chronic diseases and more to better their day-to-day lives.

Tune into this week’s episode of Beyond the Basics Health Academy for a conversation with Dr. Eric Zielinski about the healing powers contained within essential oils. Learn about the common myths surrounding essential oils, how they positively impact the brain, and how to safely and effectively use them in your everyday life.

Quotes

• “The chemical structure that chemists and pharmacists get to create the drugs that we use today are from nature….These are the chemicals in plants, these are the essential oils.” (5:04-5:18)

• “A lack of bacteria creates a poorly developed immune system, which puts your brain at risk for inflammation.” (9:42-9:50)

• “These synthetic fragrances have been linked to autoimmunity and, of course, allergies, but at what cost?” (13:50-13:58)

• “Some research studies have...proven that post-operative patients that have a view of nature heal quicker and get out of the hospital versus someone that has a window view of the garage.” (15:21-15:35)

• “Out of all of the essential oils manufactured on the planet, 50% are used by the food and flavor industry. You are consuming essential oils every day in microdoses.” (30:19-30:35)

• “Low acetylcholine in the brain is the hallmark of Alzheimer’s and Dementia.”  (42:18-42:21)

“Let food be your medicine,” says Cathy Moore, PA-C, a Physician’s Assistant at One Agora Integrative Health. Cathy explains that many of us have started treating food as a passing need rather than a vital fuel. We often eat on the go and may not even remember what we ate for lunch by the time we’re eating dinner! This approach critically disrupts our gut health, since we aren’t taking the time to rest and digest before, during and after each meal.

Rather than rushing through meals, Cathy suggests that we instead be intentional about what we eat and how we eat it. By taking deep breaths before starting a meal, for example, we activate our parasympathetic nervous system, prepping our bodies to better digest our food. An increase in mindfulness around food also allows us to establish a better relationship with what we’re eating, promoting an attitude of gratefulness rather than the fear that so often surrounds restrictive diets.

Tune into this week’s episode of Beyond the Basics Health Academy for a conversation with Cathy Moore about digestive health. Learn about the differences between healthy and harmful bacteria, the strategies you can use to retrain your taste buds, and how best to balance between your emotional and nutritional worlds. Improving your gut health is not an impossible feat! Join Cathy and host Meaghan Kirschling for some simple steps you can take to kickstart the journey towards a balanced microbiome.

Quotes

• “If you’re going to sit down for a meal, it’s important to take some time and look at your plate, just connect and be intentional with what you’re eating instead of eating emotionally. Because most of us are eating out of emotional needs that haven’t been met. So, when you’re intentional with what you’re eating, you’re looking at your plate, you’re sending gratitude and thankfulness into those foods, which really actually brings good frequencies into that food and helps with the structure of the food.” (4:25-4:52)

• “I think every meal is a chance to heal the body. It’s either that food is going to bring life-giving frequencies and health and life into our body or it’s going to bring cellular death.” (5:39-5:47)

• “We have the good, healthy bacteria that’s really necessary to be able to regulate and govern over our immune system function. And you want to have plenty of what’s called acromancia. I call them the ABCs: acromancia, bifidobacterium, and clostridia. Those are our main healthy, good bacteria that we really need in balance, and when those have too much, then that causes problems, but when there’s not enough, the immune system is really suppressed and low.” (18:48-19:17)

• “Oftentimes, patients will feel like, ‘Gosh, I’m just anxious all the time. I’m so nervous.’ And you think about...what’s going on in their brain, when actually we should be thinking, ‘What’s going on in their gut?’” (22:33-22:45)

• “Let food be your medicine.” (26:46-26:48)

“The average person checks their cellphone 160 times a day,” says Edmund McCormick, author of Happiness Power: How to unleash your power and live a more joyful life. “If you didn’t have a cellphone, what would you do with those 160 moments?” Edmund explains to our listeners that he actually got rid of his cellphone a few years back, after noticing how much time the people around him were spending on their devices, completely unaware of their surroundings. Now, he is only reachable by landline and much happier because of it!

Edmund decided to do a deeper dive into the power of happiness after reading the 2020 World Happiness Report, which indicates that, on average, US citizens are the least happy they’ve been in 20 years. This finding piqued Edmund’s interest, and he ultimately wrote a book detailing his findings, including 50 powers that typically accompany an increase in happiness.

Tune into this week’s episode of Beyond the Basics Health Academy for a conversation with Edmund about happiness and how to find it. Learn about the many powers that come with happiness, how to cultivate a glass-half-full mentality, and why self-love and positive self-talk are key to finding long-term contentment.

Quotes

• “Happiness gives us things that people who are not happy don’t have. And that’s where the title Happiness Power came from because there’s a great deal of power if you are happy and content in life. Those that are happier tend to earn more money, they tend to get promotions, they tend to have a greater circle of friends, and so on.” (2:23-2:51)

• “I wound up with the conclusion that you really can’t find happiness directly. It will elude you….How then do you find happiness? You find it indirectly. You find it by practicing self-kindness, by looking for your purpose in life...having more family and friends and building that circle builds our happiness, showing gratitude even for the smallest things increases our happiness, and also giving increases happiness.” (3:10-4:09)

• “The average person checks his cellphone 160 times a day. If you didn’t have a cellphone, what would you do with those 160 moments?” (8:17-8:25)

• “It’s not the material things that make you happy. It’s how you feel about the material things….You could be acquiring the best automobile and then after a week or two the smell wears away and you think, ‘What’s next?’ Or you could be getting a raise, and you’re so excited about that raise, and then a month later, gee, you deserve another one. So, it’s your mindset that’s creating your happiness, it’s what’s inside you.” (20:58-21:47)

• “Use a mantra, meaning repeating to yourself the same few positive words about yourself….Just take 45 seconds to a minute to do that when you get up in the morning or if you’re feeling a little down in the afternoon. Just say it to yourself, don’t say it outloud, and you will find that in several weeks, you’re going to see that the light gets brighter, the curtain lifts, and things look better! All of a sudden, that half empty glass is now looking like it’s half full.” (29:02-29:55)

On today's BTBHA episode, Cathy Moore from One Agora sits down with Meaghan to talk about low dose immunotherapy and allergen support.

Today on Beyond the Basics Health Academy, Dr. Meaghan sits down with Michael Rubino to talk about mold, mold toxicity, and home remediation.

Michael Rubino has become an expert on mold and home remediation. From his work, he has found that many times builders and contractors don't know how to tackle mold correctly. To educate those who are suffering, Rubino wrote the book Mold Medic. In detail, Rubino advises readers on how to choose a mold remediation company and the exact processes that companies should be using. He also explains how to recover from mold-related illnesses. His message is perfect for those interested in achieving and maintaining robust health.

Rubino’s focus is not just on removing cosmetic damage resulting from mold. It’s on removing all traces of mold, the spores they leave behind and the toxins produced by the mold. He’s discovered that a person suffering from hypersensitivity to mold needs all three types of decontamination to regain their health.

In one home or business after another where mold was supposedly eliminated, Rubino found the cause of continuing mold-related illness: conventional mold remediators are only doing part of the job. He intends to correct this situation.

Rubino and his company - All American Restoration - have been featured in USA Today, NJBiz, Reader’s Digest, New Jersey Monthly, and Digital Trends. He was also selected as a speaker for the Spring 2020 Indoor Air Quality Association Meeting and Expo.

Rubino received a Bachelor of Science degree in 2008 and is a council-certified microbial remediator from the American Council for Accredited Certification and a New York State Department of Labor Remediation Contractor. He has spent the past seven years involved in construction and remediating mold contamination.

Thanks so much, Michael, for coming on the show to tackles these and many more topics during our discussion about mold and mycotoxins.
